When the Rain Returns: Is Your Vehicle Lighting Ready?

After the unusually dry weather and lack of rain we’ve experienced this year, weatherproofing might not be the first thing on your mind when choosing commercial vehicle lighting.

But we all know British weather has a habit of making up for lost time.

For commercial vehicles, trailers and refrigerated transport, lighting has to perform reliably throughout the year. Rain, standing water, road spray, pressure washing, dust and grime are all part of everyday working life. That's why at illumos, weather protection isn't an optional extra — our commercial vehicle lighting range is IP69 rated.

What does IP69 actually mean?

You've probably seen IP ratings mentioned on lighting and electrical equipment, but what do those numbers really tell you?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, an internationally recognised rating system used to indicate how effectively an enclosure protects its electrical components against the ingress of solids and water.

With IP69, the two digits tell us two important things:

6 – Dust-tight protection
The highest level of protection against solid particles. Dust and dirt are prevented from entering the enclosure and interfering with the components inside.

9 – Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets
This represents an extremely high level of water-ingress protection, making IP69-rated products particularly well suited to demanding environments where equipment may be exposed to intensive washdowns.

For commercial vehicles, that's important. A light might spend its working life exposed to everything from motorway spray and winter road grime to regular pressure washing.

Why IP69 matters for commercial vehicle lighting

A commercial vehicle light doesn't have the luxury of living in a clean, dry environment.

Exterior scene lights can be subjected to heavy rain, mud, spray and changing temperatures. Trailer lighting can operate for long periods in demanding environments, while interior lighting may also need to withstand frequent cleaning.

For refrigerated trailers in particular, cleanliness is critical. Lighting needs to be suitable for an environment where regular washdowns and strict hygiene procedures can be part of normal operation.

Choosing IP69 lighting provides another layer of confidence that the product has been designed with these demanding conditions in mind.

IP69 across the illumos range

At illumos, we've made IP69 protection a feature across our commercial vehicle lighting range rather than reserving it for a handful of specialist products.

Vytron — Scene Light

Vytron is our scene lighting solution, designed to provide powerful illumination around commercial vehicles.

As an externally mounted light, protection against the elements is essential. Whether it's dealing with rain on site, motorway spray or the vehicle being washed down at the end of a shift, Vytron's IP69 rating helps ensure it's ready for demanding working environments.

Syntra — Circular Interior Light

Designed specifically with applications such as refrigerated trailers in mind, Syntra is a circular interior ceiling light that combines clean, effective illumination with the durability required in commercial applications.

Its IP69 rating makes it particularly suited to environments where regular cleaning and washdowns are part of everyday operation.

Zynex — Rugged Rectangular Light

Zynex is a rugged, rectangular surface-mounted light designed for versatile use across trucks and vans. Powered by our Photonix™ LED array, it delivers bright, uniform illumination while reducing glare — ideal for working vehicle interiors where clear, comfortable visibility matters.

Its all-metal, repairable construction is built for durability and a long service life, while our high-efficiency constant-voltage driver (patent applied) supports a wide 10–30V input range.

Combined with its IP69 rating, Zynex is designed to cope with the dust, moisture, cleaning and demanding day-to-day conditions that come with commercial vehicle use.

Kyrod — Heavy-Duty Lighting

For applications where durability is paramount, there's Kyrod.

Kyrod is a heavy-duty lighting solution housed in a one-piece metal construction for maximum durability, making it particularly well suited to trailer converters and demanding commercial installations.

Combine that robust construction with IP69 protection and you have a lighting solution engineered for environments where equipment needs to work hard and keep working.

Xyrion — Ultra-Low-Profile Light Bar

Sometimes the challenge isn't just durability — it's finding a high-quality lighting solution that will actually fit.

At only 7 mm, Xyrion is an ultra-low-profile light bar built around our Photonix™ LED array and packaged inside a sleek polycarbonate tube.

Available in 270 mm and 520 mm lengths, Xyrion provides smooth, glare-free illumination in a compact form factor designed to fit where conventional lighting solutions cannot.

And despite its ultra-slim profile, Xyrion still benefits from the same IP69 protection found across the illumos range.

Weatherproofing shouldn't be an afterthought

When the weather is dry, it's easy to forget just how hostile the environment surrounding a commercial vehicle can be.

Then the rain returns.

Add road spray, mud, dust, cleaning chemicals, pressure washing and the general punishment that working vehicles experience, and ingress protection quickly becomes an important consideration.

At illumos, we'd rather design for those conditions from the outset.

From Vytron scene lighting and Syntra refrigerated trailer lighting to Zynex truck and van lighting, heavy-duty Kyrod solutions and ultra-low-profile Xyrion light bars, our commercial vehicle lighting products are IP69 rated as standard.

Because good commercial vehicle lighting shouldn't only perform when conditions are perfect.

It should be ready for whatever comes next — even when the British weather finally remembers how to rain.
